While I am beyond knackered on this Wednesday night, I feel like I must stay awake long enough to give all of you back home a quick update.
Last week I went out with Eimear and met some amazing people that I hope to spend more time with. They’re all pretty cool and I’m so glad I’m making friends so quickly here. This place is seriously awesome.
While Halloween isn’t big here, the 5th of November is. It’s called Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night and it’s a huge celebration of fireworks displays and bonfires. As the very handy Wikipedia states:
“Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure.”
Now that Halloween is over and Bonfire Night is imminent, Christmas is upon us. And with that, I leave you with the very exciting and pretty display of Christmas decorations going up in Covent Garden. 🙂
